Significance of Floodplain Zones on Level of Rural Development in the Middle Ganga Plain of Eastern Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

Floodplain geomorphology significantly influences agricultural productivity and human settlement; however, its role in explaining spatial variations in rural development has received limited quantitative attention, particularly in the Middle Ganga Plain of India. This study addresses this research gap by examining the relationship between floodplain characteristics and the level of rural development in Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh. Rural development was assessed using a multidimensional composite index, and its association with floodplain characteristics was evaluated through statistical analysis. The results reveal substantial inter-block disparities, with Dharmapur, Muftiganj, Sirkoni, and Jalalpur classified as highly developed, whereas seven blocks are classified in the low-development category. A moderate positive correlation (r = 0.34) indicates that favourable floodplain conditions contribute to higher agricultural productivity, improved infrastructure, and better socio-economic development, although non-physical factors also influence development outcomes. The findings demonstrate the importance of integrating geomorphological characteristics into rural planning and policy to promote balanced, resilient, and sustainable development in floodplain regions. The study highlights the importance of incorporating geomorphological characteristics into regional planning and rural development strategies to ensure balanced and sustainable development.
