Natural Lakes as Strategic Resources in Uttarakhand: A Critical Geographical Review of Hydrological, Ecological, Cultural and Management Functions

Abstract
Natural lakes in Uttarakhand occupy a small fraction of the Himalayan landscape but perform functions that are disproportionately important to mountain settlements, biodiversity, tourism, cultural practice and environmental knowledge. Their resource value is strongly geographical: mid-elevation lakes in the Kumaun Lesser Himalaya are embedded in densely used urban and peri-urban catchments, whereas many Garhwal lakes occur at high elevations where seasonal snow, difficult access, pilgrimage and ecological sensitivity shape both use and vulnerability. This critical narrative review evaluates the importance of Uttarakhand's natural lakes as geographical resources rather than treating them simply as standing water bodies. Literature was selected through live searches of multidisciplinary and environmental scholarly sources, with emphasis on verified peer-reviewed studies of hydrology, water quality, biodiversity, sediment archives, remote sensing, tourism-related pressures and restoration. The synthesis shows that the strongest evidence concerns Nainital and a small group of Kumaun lakes, creating a pronounced spatial bias in the knowledge base. Nainital demonstrates the coupled nature of lake, groundwater, catchment and urban water supply, while Bhimtal, Naukuchiatal and Sattal illustrate how different catchment settings produce distinct water-quality and sedimentary trajectories. High-altitude systems such as Hemkund, Dodi Tal, Neel Tal and Deoria Tal have lower direct urban dependence but high cultural, ecological and scientific value. Across lake types, resource importance is inseparable from risk: water abstraction, tourism, storm runoff, sewage, nutrient enrichment, sedimentation, plastic pollution and catchment change can erode the ecological processes on which provisioning and cultural services depend. Intervention studies indicate that engineered measures can improve selected conditions, but durable resource security requires catchment-scale source control, long-term monitoring and lake-type-specific governance. The central conclusion is that Uttarakhand's natural lakes should be managed as coupled socio-ecological and hydrological assets whose value depends on maintaining ecological condition, catchment integrity and culturally legitimate access.
